Port Jackson Over 70s Season Report

Port Jackson over 70’s enjoyed a stellar season with 17 games (excluding State and National Titles) on their calendar.

These 17 games were mid-week regionals and Mini Carnivals, and Port Jackson came away with 12 wins. A few of the losses were questionable with the opposition fielding underage players, which is not to say that Port Jackson hadn’t done that a couple of times as well.

Unfortunately, a further two scheduled Mini Carnival matches in Gloucester at the beginning of the season were cancelled due to bad weather and the planned Port Jackson Mini Carnival in December didn’t go ahead as two teams pulled out at the eleventh hour.

Port Jackson was well represented at International, National and State level during the season.

Wasa represented Australia in the recent 070 World Cup held in New Zealand

In the Nationals played on the Sunshine Coast Port Jackson had Wasa and Simon Lyon playing in the NSW 1st Division team who went on to win the Doug Turnbull Shield.

Peter Harrison (C), Ian Iveson, Harvey weir, Cuthbert Berenger and John Parker represented NSW in the 2nd Division team.

Douglas Latto and Bob Saville also represented and went on to win the Cricket Australia Masters 070’s Shield for the NSW Boomers in 3rd Division.

Neville Alexander and Greg McLeay played for NSW Kangaroos in 3rd Division.

Port Jackson again excelled in the recent 070’s State Championships in Ballina with the 2nd Division team winning the John Fryer/ Kevin Pyke Plate and the 1st Division team finishing a creditable 3rd in an 8-team competition.

First Century Maker

Many of us were witnesses to an astonishing event at Rogers Park Woy Woy in October when Ken Gilson smashed 102 n.o. off just 42 balls, with 9 sixes and 7 fours to become the first century maker to represent Port Jackson in any age group. Congratulations Kenny G!

In closing

Moving forward if teams are playing younger players to make up numbers for 070’s it might be worthwhile implementing the same guidelines as used recently in the State Championships.

Thanks to all the players involved and particular thanks to Harvey Weir, Paul Georgiadis, Cuthbert Berenger, Douglas Latto and Paul Adams for their assistance and support and a special thank you to Tim Jones for his unflagging efforts with PlayHQ.

Looking forward to further challenges, fun, and good cricket in the forthcoming season.
